The Ericsson Cradlepoint R980 is a ruggedized 5G router for mobile and IoT deployments where temperature extremes, vibration and hazardous locations rule out ordinary equipment. This part number, TAA-MB05-R980-5GD-A, is the TAA-compliant U.S. Federal Government SKU. It bundles the R980 with Wi-Fi with a 5-year Ericsson NetCloud Mobile Essentials plan. The hardware ships without an AC power supply or antennas. It has four SMA cellular connectors for external 600 MHz–6 GHz paddle antennas, two RP-SMA Wi-Fi connectors and one SMA GNSS connector. The embedded 3GPP Release 16 modem covers 5G NR low- and mid-band in both NSA and SA modes, with LTE Advanced Pro Category 19 fallback and 4x4 MIMO. Peak rates reach up to 3.4 Gbps downlink and 550 Mbps uplink on NSA. The router offers two 4FF SIM slots and MFF2 eSIM hardware for up to eight carrier profiles, with over-the-air carrier switching planned for future NetCloud OS releases. 5G network slicing supports up to four DNN/PDN instances. Public safety certifications include FirstNet Trusted, T-Mobile T-Priority and Verizon Frontline Network Slice. On the local side, the R980 provides two switchable GbE ports, dual-band concurrent Wi-Fi 6 with WPA3, and a screw-lock USB 2.0 port. Active multi-constellation GNSS supports location tracking. The IP64 metal housing operates from -30 °C to 70 °C and is rated for Class I Div 2 locations. It meets MIL-STD-810H shock and vibration standards and carries NFPA 130 and BSS 7239 ratings for rail. It runs on 9–36 VDC with ignition sensing and ISO 7637-2 transient protection. The Essentials plan covers NetCloud Manager management and software updates for the full term.
