The Ericsson Cradlepoint R980 is a ruggedized, secure router that brings 5G to in-vehicle, public safety and hazardous-location deployments in a compact 601 g metal chassis. Part number MB03-R980-5GD-A is the global configuration, covering the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the EU and the UK. It bundles the router with a 3-year NetCloud Mobile Essentials plan, which covers NetCloud Manager, software updates, 24x7 support and a limited lifetime warranty for the term. The AC power supply and antennas are sold separately. The embedded modem covers 5G NR low- and mid-band from 600 MHz to 6 GHz on NSA and SA networks, with LTE Advanced Pro Category 19 fallback and 3GPP Release 16. Peak rates reach 3.4 Gbps down and 550 Mbps up on NSA. The modem has two 4FF SIM slots, MFF2 eSIM hardware for up to eight carrier profiles, and 5G network slicing with up to four DNN/PDN instances. It is certified by AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon and holds public safety certifications including FirstNet Trusted, T-Mobile T-Priority and Verizon Frontline. CBRS Band 48 is supported for private networks. Locally, the R980 provides dual-band concurrent 2x2 MU-MIMO Wi-Fi 6 with AP, client and Wi-Fi-as-WAN modes. It also has two LAN/WAN switchable GbE ports and a screw-lock USB 2.0 port. Rated throughput is 940 Mbps for firewall and IPS and 200 Mbps for IPsec VPN, with 20 concurrent tunnels and up to 64 VLANs. A dual-core ARMv8 CPU runs Docker containers, and active GNSS tracks GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou. The R980 is rated IP64 and operates from -30 °C to 70 °C. It is tested to MIL-STD-810H and certified for E-Mark, SAE J1455, NFPA 130 and Class I Div 2. It runs on 9–36 VDC with ignition sensing and draws 11 W typical.
