The Ericsson Cradlepoint R980 is a ruggedized, secure router that brings 5G to vehicles, light rail and field IoT without a large footprint. It measures 133.6 x 121.5 x 41 mm and weighs 601 g. The embedded modem covers 5G NR low- and mid-band across 600 MHz–6 GHz on both non-standalone and standalone networks, with LTE Advanced Pro Category 19 fallback and 3GPP Release 16. Rated peak rates reach up to 3.4 Gbps downlink and 550 Mbps uplink on NSA. For cellular access, the R980 has dual 4FF SIM slots and embedded MFF2 eSIM hardware that holds up to eight carrier profiles. It supports 5G network slicing with up to four DNN/PDN instances. Public safety certifications include FirstNet Trusted, T-Mobile Connecting Heroes, T-Mobile T-Priority, Verizon Frontline Verified, Verizon Frontline Network Slice and ESN (4G). The local network runs on two LAN/WAN-switchable GbE ports and dual-band, dual-concurrent 2x2 Wi-Fi 6 with WPA3. A screw-lock USB 2.0 port and an optional serial adapter cable add expansion. Active GNSS with GPS, Galileo, GLONASS and BeiDou supports location tracking and coverage maps. A dual-core ARMv8 CPU runs Docker containers, and the router is rated for 940 Mbps stateful firewall throughput and 20 VPN tunnels.
