4 mH 5 A High Frequency Reactor, Screw Terminals

The Hammond 197E5 is a 197 Series high frequency reactor rated 4 mH at 5 A DC, intended for high frequency filtering applications operating from 60 Hz to 10 kHz. It is aimed at power electronics designers, OEM engineers and panel builders who need an inductor with a high self-resonant frequency for AC filter and choke positions.

The 197E5 packs 4 mH at 5 A DC into the compact 3.31 in x 3.40 in x 2.50 in frame, with a 232 mOhm DC resistance and a 250.5 kHz self-resonant frequency.

Typical electrical values from the drawing: inductance with bias of 4.0mH ±15% @ 5ADC, self-resonant frequency of 250.5 kHz, impedance at SRF of 68.98K Ohms, ripple current of 20% peak-to-peak, DC resistance of 232 mOhm ±15% at 20°C, dielectric strength of 2500V RMS and a temperature range of -40 to 105°C.

The reactor is wound on a carbonyl iron powder core, described on the drawing as a high permeability core ideal for applications below 50 kHz, and uses rugged construction with an aluminum base and stainless steel band plus open-style screw terminals for maximum versatility. Size A x B x C is 3.31 in x 3.4 in x 2.5 in (84 mm x 86 mm x 64 mm), with a 2.50 in (64 mm) x 2.00 in (51 mm) mounting hole pattern. The drawing lists the weight as 2.5 lbs, and the shipping weight is 2 lbs (0.91 kg).

The 197E5 is REACH and RoHS compliant and is marked Made in Canada. Performance graphs for inductance versus DC bias current and quality factor were taken at 1.0 volt AC drive; results are typical and subject to normal manufacturing and electrical tolerances. For DC applications the series literature points to the 195-196 Series.
