The RM1U0808SBK is a 1U rack-mount or desktop instrument enclosure from the RM Series, built from extruded aluminum with solid top and bottom panels. Its overall dimensions are 1.75 in (44 mm) high, 8.30 in (211 mm) wide and 8.00 in (203 mm) deep, and it is intended for electronics designers, OEM engineers and test and measurement builders who need a compact 1U chassis for desktop use or for rack mounting with the optional flanges.

Construction uses a Type 6063 extruded aluminum frame, with extruded aluminum side, front and rear panels 0.125" (3.2 mm) thick and flat 5052-H32 aluminum top and bottom panels .064" (1.6 mm) thick. The enclosure is finished in rugged textured black powder coat. The solid top and bottom panels give a closed, unperforated case; a vented version is available as RM1U0808VBK. Because of the powder coat, panels are not grounded to the frame and the grounding method is to be determined by the customer.

This half-width version does not include 19" rack mounting ears; the drawing notes the mounting flange is not included and lists RM1UMTGFL mounting flanges with screws as an accessory. It accepts the 1427B2BK pull handle, and the drawing shows an 8.300 in (210.82 mm) body with a 204.47 mm [8.050 in] front panel.

The knockdown design ships unassembled for easy handling and shipping protection. Per the drawing the kit includes 12 flat head 4-40 x 3/8" screws, 8 flat head 6-32 x 3/8" screws, 12 #4 speed nuts, 4 self adhesive rubber feet. It ships in a box at 3.8 lbs (1.72 kg) and is RoHS and REACH compliant, and it is manufactured in North America.
